About the Royal Anglian Regiment Cap Badge

The Royal Anglian cap badge combines a Gibraltar Castle and Key with a ROYAL ANGLIAN scroll, mounted on a silver eight-pointed star. The basic design predates the regiment itself and developed from the common badge adopted by the East Anglian Brigade in 1958.

The badge brings together several distinct strands of regimental ancestry. Contemporary East Anglian Brigade material linked the star with the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment and the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, while the Castle and Key came through the Suffolk, Essex and Northamptonshire traditions. The Gibraltar device reflects the service of antecedent regiments during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, 1779–1783.

The Royal Norfolk and Royal Leicestershire traditions were retained elsewhere in Royal Anglian dress rather than being forced into the common cap badge. Britannia continued as a Norfolk distinction, while the Royal Tiger became an important Leicestershire inheritance within the regiment.
