The Irish Guards were formed in April 1900 by order of Queen Victoria in recognition of the gallantry of Irish units during the Second Boer War. The regiment has served in the First and Second World Wars and on later operations including Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, while continuing its ceremonial role within the Household Division. Within the Army, the regiment is traditionally and affectionately known as the Micks.

About the Badge

The Irish Guards cap star is based on the eight-pointed Star of the Order of St Patrick. At its centre is the Cross of St Patrick with a shamrock bearing three crowns, surrounded by a circlet carrying the motto Quis Separabit (“Who shall separate us?”) and the date MDCCLXXXIII for the foundation of the Order in 1783.
