About the Crest
The HMS Raleigh design combines a gold terrestrial globe with a natural-coloured roebuck's head. Royal Museums Greenwich records the official 1919 Raleigh badge as showing the roebuck's head beneath the globe. The globe refers to Sir Walter Raleigh's The History of the World, published in 1614, while the roebuck derives from the Raleigh family crest. The design is surmounted by a Naval Crown and enclosed by a gold twisted-rope border.
